We physically go out into the forests, parks, and streets and make contact with the homeless veterans that live there. Once we find them, we provide basic necessities such as clothing, outdoor equipment, and food in order to reduce the burdens of homeless life. We then inform them where resources that can assist them further are located such as: emergency shelters, low-income housing organizations, food banks, employment agencies, and VA Claims Service Officers.
-Search and Rescue bridges the gap between the two most beneficial events for homeless veterans in Brevard.
Cocoa Stand Down in March conducted by the Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard, and Titusville Stand Down in September conducted by NVHS. Since the veterans do not have electricity or telephones, information is hard to distribute to them. The best way to raise awareness of these events (and others) is through face to face meetings... Search and Rescue is the solution.
NVHS conducts our Stand Down annually at DAV Post 109 in Titusville. Veterans are transported out of the forests and for one day it is all about them. They have access to medical and dental care, new boots, backpacks, clothes, warm food, showers, haircuts, hygiene items, VA Claims Specialists, Department of Motor Vehicle personnel for ID's and Licenses, free legal advice and much, much more.
